Iceland’s capital Reykjavik will no longer buy any products, which were produced in Israel. According to the newspaper Iceland Mag, the city council of Reykjavik decided on Tuesday to boycott Israel as long as the occupations of Palestine continues. The council also criticized the apartheid-politics of Israel in a press-statement, and announced their support for Palestinian independence.
The member of the social-democratic party, Björk Vilhelmsdóttir, is responsible for the resolution; she also wants to resign from her political position. Sóley Tómasdóttir, member of the left-green alliance, told the state-owned radio broadcasting station, that this step is supposed to put pressure on the Israeli government.
The decision has caused a public outcry in Israel and is criticized by several Jewish organizations. The European Jewish Congress (EJC) is currently advising about possible judicial consequences against the legislation. The Israeli Foreign-ministry has also expressed its concern over the steps taken by Reykjavik’s city council.
The city council of Reykjavik also announced that it would be possible for the boycott to be imposed upon other states that can be accused of the violation of human-rights.
