Former Prime Minister of Italy, Silvio Berlusconi, has declared that the reunification of Crimea with the Russian Federation in 2014 has been a democratic decision by the people of the peninsula on Sunday. In addition, he praised Russian President Vladimir Putin as the “greatest political leader”, according to the news agency Reuters.
Silvio Berlusconi is so far the most prominent western politician who visited Crimea after the reunification with Russia earlier this month. Last year, under leadership of Washington, almost all Western countries decided to impose sanctions on the Russian Federation after the inclusion of Ukrainian territory within its own boundaries.
While still in office, Berlusconi had close relations with the Russian head of state. He criticized Western sanctions and implied that the measures taken against the Russian State would ultimately fail to achieve their political goal. Instead, they would cripple the development of Italian businesses, especially within the Federation, which since have slumped significantly.
